of like romney was. kerry was perceived to do much better than bush in the debate. closed the gap substantially. there were a lot of soft democratic vote worries strayed from his side. his debate performance brought them back into the fold. that's not the case now. it's more of a mishmash of democrats and republicans and casual voters. he needs something big that's going to move that three, four points. if it's not the debate, i don't know what else it is. >> jonathan, in your column today you suggest democrats may be getting a little overconfident going into the debates. you say romney sounded reasonable on "60 minutes." he didn't sound like the guy who insulted half the country. that's hardly great expectations. that's more like "bleak house." isn't it? >> i said he trashed half the country. that's very important. he trashed half the country. >> your use of that colloquialism. >> mitt romney sounded reasonable. that's not to say he was correct or to say his policy prescriptions are the right ones for t

romney and mr. ryan are saying it's the president who are into social divisiveness. they are the ones splitting the countries between the have and have nots. they're the one playing the wealth disparity card. >> well, quite the opposite. you know i was a psychologist before i was a political person. in psychology we say that sometimes if someone's got a problem, that they tend to talk about it in ways that is very contradictory to their own feelings. the fact is that mitt romney said 47% of the american people basically are free-loaders parasites. he was talking about good hard working, salt of the earth, ohioans, americans. that started a narrative that built up over a series of months as we watched this man and watched this campaign. and that video confirmed for many ohioans exactly what they were thinking this man may be like. and he can say all he wants to say about class warfare, but he's the one waging it. you know he pays 14.1% in federal income tax. the average ohioan pays more than 20% in f

the best attack ad on romney is mitt romney. to pick up on michael and michelle's point, what is romney going to come with in the campaign to have a good showing? he can't talk about taxes with tacks being the lowest they have been in 50 years. he can't talk about medicaid and medicare because their policies are unpopular. he can't talk about foreign policy, he doesn't have anything. the only thing he can argue is that obama has not been a good steward of the economy, but as we know, obama has a very good answer to that. and that's on offense. then you think about what he has to do on defense. he's going to be on the defense on the 47%. he's going to be on defense on his tax question. i mean, this is a guy who doesn't have very much to work with at this point. so it's hard for me to see, even if he doesn't make a major gaffe, which he does on a weekly basis, even if he doesn't, what ammunition does he have to actually have a good showing? >> i'm told there are examples of elections turning on debates, president bush for example
